The Protector was the first ever Turkish Netflix Original Production (2018- ). 3 seasons with 4th arriving 9th of July. Available subtitled and dubbed. Action, fantasy, sci-fi. S1: 10 episodes; S2: 8 episodes; S3: 7 episodes; 33-51’

Plot Summary:

Hakan is a young shopkeeper in Istanbul whose modern world gets turned upside down when he learns that he is connected to a secret ancient order. This order is tasked with protecting Istanbul from an immortal enemy. He struggles to choose between his duties as The Protector and a new found love. As Hakan disregards his training and Protector duties, he learns that an immortal’s blood contains a secret power.

Review:

I really enjoyed S1 of The Protector, which is a quite bit more risqué than most Turkish mainstream shows, but just as violent. There are some great fight scenes. All of the characters are interesting and well-developed. The storyline is exciting and there is plenty of action as well as some romance.

The whole cast are really solid in this and Çağatay Ulusoy is outstanding in the lead role. Season 2 has some issues and I didn’t like it as much as the first, however many of these have been addressed in Season 3. The third season does seem ominously prescient and there is a one magnificent time jump.

Recommended if you enjoy the genre. The Protector has a uniquely Turkish twist to the superhero genre (far more Daredevil than Superman). There are lots of historical and legendary sources drawn on in this show.
